The Guardian Software Product Line

The Original Guardian System

In 1998 a revolutionary new software product was released by dBx Solutions. Named Guardian, it completely automated the tedious and time consuming task of managing Medical Staff Privilege notification.

Before Guardian, Medical Staff Services (or “Credentials”) professionals dedicated a large portion of their time to typing, printing, and distributing binders full of privilege lists. These lists regulated which providers were privileged to perform which procedures in their facility. Due to the massive effort required to produce and maintain them, these lists were notoriously outdated and inaccurate. Because of their lack of reliability, staff would call the Credentials office before scheduling any procedure to verify that the verification lists were accurate.

Between the constant revising of lists and the constant ringing of the phone, most Credentials managers were overwhelmed every day.

Then Guardian came along. Once Guardian was installed and staff were made aware of it, the paper lists were disposed of and the phone stopped ringing all day. Instead of looking in an outdated binder or calling the Credentials manager, any staff member could simply click on a shortcut on any computer in their department and quickly and easily verify the privileges of any provider in their system.

The New Generation

Over the next decade, Guardian enjoyed success as a time and cost saver in hospitals around the world including some of the U.S. military’s largest medical centers. As word of mouth referrals made more and more credentials professionals aware of Guardian, customers began reporting that their certification inspections scores had been helped because Guardian was in place in their facility.

As computer systems have advanced over the years, new capabilities and software development tools have been created. Because of these advances,

dBx Solutions made the decision to create a new generation of Guardian from the ground up, basing it on the great success and reliability of he original Guardian product.

This new application platform provides a common set of tools for the Guardian development teams to use in creating new Guardian applications. Of course the first application to be released using the new framework is the now renamed “Staff Guardian” Privilege Management System” which retains all of the functionality of Guardian 4 and adds long list of new features and capabilities.

The Future

Starting in February, 2011, dBx Solutions will begin releasing new Guardian applications starting with Staff Guardian. Additional applications are scheduled to be released throughout the year. These new applications will provide the same level of cost and time savings to the industries that they service that the original Guardian provided to the Credentials Management community.
